Fish habitat construction
On Aug. 25, 2011, the South Santiam Watershed Council placed 30 logs downstream of Foster Reservoir. This helps establish important elements of good fish habitat by creating pools, providing shade and facilitating gravel movement. As they decay, logs provide places where aquatic invertebrates hatch and grow, an important source of fish food. Logs usually wash into reservoirs in the winter and must be removed to protect the dams when the reservoirs refill each spring. The Corps has transferred 246 logs this year for projects in the Willamette Basin. By providing the logs to watershed councils and others for stream restoration, the Corps supports the Willamette Valley Basin Biological Opinion for Endangered Species Act-listed fish recovery.
