ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Climate Change Adaptation Steering Committee, along with the USACE IWR Climate and Global Change Team, has launched a new e-newsletter that highlights current activities and initiatives of the teams.

“USACE water resources missions and operations are very sensitive to changes in climate and weather. For this reason, we have been actively addressing climate change impacts for a number of years. With the release of the new Executive Order on Preparing the United States for the Impacts of Climate Change, I’d like to begin sharing information about USACE climate change adaptation activities through this periodic newsletter,” said Mr. James C. Dalton, P.E., SES Chief of Engineering and Construction Chair, USACE Climate Change Adaptation Steering Committee, in the first edition’s “Welcome.”

The December 5th newsletter, now available to the public, takes an in-depth look at Executive Order 13653 on Preparing the United States for the Impacts of Climate Change that was released on November 1, 2013. Deadlines within the executive order that affect USACE and its climate change initiatives include a March 3, 2014 deadline to complete and file an updated Adaptation Plan and an August 31, 2014 deadline to complete an inventory and assessment of proposed and completed changes to land- and water-related policies, programs and regulations (along with other federal agencies).

“I am very proud that USACE is on the leading edge of important research and projects that will help ensure our infrastructure and operations are prepared for future conditions. Climate Change and Climate Adaptation issues are shared responsibilities…it’s going to take a team of teams throughout the government and private sector. In fact, just a few weeks ago two of our USACE professionals, Dr. Kate White and Mr. Mark Huber, were recognized with the President’s GreenGov Climate Champion Award as part of an interagency team that developed a Sandy Sea Level Rise Tool,” said Lieutenant General Thomas P. Bostick, U.S. Army Commanding General and Chief of Engineers, in the newsletter’s “Message.”

The newsletter will regularly feature:

  • a message from USACE leadership
  • spotlight feature on an aspect of climate change or climate adapation issues with high visibility
  • current initiatives related to responding and adapting to climate change
  • climate change related online tools developed by USACE or its partners
  • highlights of climate change or adaptation initiatives in which USACE teams participate while working together with other federal agencies
  • policy and guidance related to climate change

The newsletter will be published approximately quarterly and can be found posted on the Responses to Climate Change website.
