Coastal Environments

Coastal regions include some of the world's most productive ecosystems. Marshes, embayments and estuaries provide food and habitat for all types of wildlife. Fish and other marine animals frequent coastal waters. The commingling of land and water creates unique and valuable environments that are extremely diverse.

Human-induced changes to the coast can significantly affect ecosystems. Changes in sediment supply or water quality can adversely impact wildlife, while preservation of coastal areas can encourage and improve biodiversity and ecosystem health. The rich resources of the coastal zone require humans and wildlife alike to share these important environments.

Rare Ecosystems

The Florida Everglades, the Louisiana wetlands, and the coral reefs near Hawaii and the Caribbean islands are examples of rare and vibrant coastal ecosystems.
