Environmental and Water Resources Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers (EWRI/ASCE)

Created in 1999, the Environmental and Water Resources Institute is a civil engineering specialty institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the country's oldest national engineering society.

EWRI services are designed to complement ASCE's traditional civil engineering base and to attract new categories of members (non-civil engineer allied professionals) who seek to enhance their professional and technical development.

EWRI was formed to provide improved and comprehensive products and services to a variety of engineering teams working in technical, educational, and professional areas. Former ASCE Technical Division enrollees (Environmental Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Water Resources Planning and Management, and the Water and Environmental Standards Council), form EWRI's 22,000 person membership base.

EWRI founded the American Academy of Water Resources Engineers (AAWRE) in 2004 for practicing water resources professionals. The Academy was started primarily to offer a voluntary, post-license credential that will provide professionals and practitioners an opportunity to gain further recognition in the field of water resources engineering.

The Academy started the Diplomate, Specialty Certification program to give an opportunity to professionals that are practicing in the field of water resources engineering. AAWRE's goal is dedicated to improving the practice, elevating the standards, and advancing the profession of water resources engineering.
