Dr. Kenneth Strzepek to Become Sixth Maass-White Visiting Scholar

ALEXANDRIA, VA  — March 20, 2009. Dr. Kenneth Strzepek, Professor at the University of Colorado, will join the Institute as the 2009-2010 Maass-White Visiting Scholar. Dr. Strzepek's expertise with the World Bank will make him a valuable participant in Corps efforts to develop technically sound, practical plans and procedures for water adaptation to climate change.

As Maass-White Fellow, Dr. Strzepek is expected to work with water resources planning and climate change adaptation issues, including:

  • Preparation of a monograph on "Water Resources Planning and Adaptation under Climate Change Uncertainty"
  • Support of the initiation of an interagency (DOE, USEPA, USACE) effort on "Integrated Assessment Modeling of Climate Change Impacts on Water Resources/Energy Nexus for the USA"
  • Support of IWR international activities as part of the new UNESCO ICIWaRM Center
  • Coordination with the World Bank, particularly operational and policy issues related to infrastructure investment and climate change

Dr. Strzepek's experience includes that of professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, professor of Economics, senior research fellow at the International Food Policy Research Institute, international fellow in the Center for Environmental Economics and Policy for Africa at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, founding director of the Center for Advanced Decision Support for Water and Environmental Systems (CADSWES) at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and collaborations at the World Bank.

The Maass-White Fellowship is designed to ensure that solutions to address today's water resources problems are infused with the innovative thinking of tomorrow from the Nation's top academics, while concurrently stimulating a deeper understanding of real-world water resource problems by those in academia. The Institute's Maass-White appointment is offered annually to a scholar whose works promote innovative, substantive reforms in water resources policy, research or analysis. The appointment enables a scholar to work on critical contemporary issues alongside the technical staff of the U.S. Army Engineer Institute of Water Resources, either in the Washington DC area or at the Hydrologic Engineering Center in Davis, California.
