ICIWaRM Sponsors Global Water News Watch

ALEXANDRIA, VA – September 28, 2009. The new web-based Global Water News Watch features water news stories from around the world. Global Water News Watch is sponsored by IWR's International Center for Integrated Water Resources Management (ICIWaRM) and produced by the University of Arizona's SAHRA (Sustainability of semi-Arid Hydrology and Riparian Areas) center. SAHRA is a core partner of ICIWaRM.

Global Water News Watch highlights feature stories and offers search tools by keyword, topic, timeframe, or geographic location. It tracks recent stories from 204 countries in over a dozen topic areas, including: climate change, conservation, drought, flood, groundwater, infrastructure development, riparian areas and water supply. The News Watch also offers resources for teachers, guiding them in ways to use its database as a resource for students who are investigating current issues related to water.

The University of Arizona and IWR signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to facilitate cooperation in integrated water resources management, scientific research and capacity building. The partnership is intended to lead to collaborative efforts furthering sustainable development and sound water management policies, particularly in arid and semi-arid climates. SAHRA's mission at the university is to identify critical stakeholder-relevant knowledge gaps and conduct basin-focused multidisciplinary research to fill them, and to convey what is known and what is being learned to improve water management and policy.

ICIWaRM resides within the U.S. Army Engineer Institute for Water Resources (IWR) in collaboration with several U.S. academic institutions and professional organizations sharing an interest in the advancement of the science and practice of integrated water resources management around the globe. ICIWaRM's water science node is led by an academic consortium headed by the University of Arizona, and includes partnerships with the Universities of New Hampshire, Oregon State, Florida International, and Colorado State. Its professional practice sector is led by the American Society of Civil Engineers Environmental and Water Resources Institute (ASCE-EWRI) with the American Water Resources Association (AWRA).
