IWR and Civil Works Headquarters Sponsor Regulatory Executive Seminar

ALEXANDRIA, VA – May 7, 2008. IWR recently supported the annual Regulatory Executive Seminar, sponsored by the Headquarters Chief of the Regulatory Program. The Seminar, initiated 20 years ago, introduces new Division and District Commanders to the Corps Regulatory Program. This year’s event was held March 25-27, 2008 in Old Town Alexandria.

Speakers included the Chief of Engineers, Lt. Gen. VanAntwerp, The Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works (ASA(CW)), the Honorable J. Paul Woodley and staff members, Mr. Let Mon Lee, the Corps liaison with Congress, Dr. Mark Sudol, Chief of the Regulatory Program, and several technical experts.

This year was the best attended Seminar to date, hosting 97 participants, including two Division Commanders and 26 Division/District Commanders and Deputies. Many Regulatory Branch Chiefs attended and sat with their Commanders.

Commanders in attendance always receive these fair warnings: "Take note of this lowly funded program under your purview. Get to know your Regulatory Branch Chief and the staff." " This program, small in comparison to others under your watch in terms of staff and funding, will conceivably consume 50% or more of your time and efforts. While small by many standards, it commands much attention from the public, from developers, from states and local entities, and particularly from Congress. It will get your attention."
