Shoreline Protection Assessment Brochure Wins Award

ALEXANDRIA, VA – March 11, 2008. An educational brochure titled "How Beach Nourishment Projects Work" won a Bronze ADDY® Award at the Greater Dayton (Ohio) Advertising Association's Hermes/ADDY® competition held on February 9, 2008. This Bronze ADDY Award was awarded in the highly competitive Public Service category and is a testament to the appeal and effectiveness of the brochure.

The piece was produced as part of the Strategic Communications work under the Shore Protection Assessment initiative. IWR led the Strategic Communications effort. Corps team members contributing to the brochure’s development include Charley Chesnutt, Lynn Martin and Susan Durden of the Institute for Water Resources; Bill Curtis of ERDC; Rick McMillen of the Jacksonville District; Tom Smith of the Honolulu District; and Dr. Bruce Taylor of the Coastal Engineering Research Board. Turner Effect of Dayton, Ohio also was named on the award.

The brochure discusses beach health, how coastal beaches function as a system, the essential problem with eroding beaches, public interest in protecting beaches, how beach nourishment projects are engineered and how they work when a storm comes ashore.
