Professor Yacov Haimes was the Maass-White Visiting Scholar for 2007-2008. In 2007 he worked with Chief Economist David Moser on the implementation of the Corps “12 Actions for Change.” He focused his work on risk analysis during his tenure as the Maass-White Fellow. His endeavors in risk analysis methods will continue to impact the “12 Actions for Change” program, as well as the updating of the Water Resources Principles and Guidelines (P&G) in accordance with the recently enacted Water Resources Development Act of 2007.
Dr. Haimes holds the Lawrence R. Quarles Professorship at the School of Engineering and Applied Science, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, and is a member of the Systems and Information Engineering and Civil Engineering faculties.
He is the Founding Director (1987) of the University's Center for Risk Management of Engineering Systems and is actively involved in sponsored research, including Channel Reliability of the Navigation System in the Upper Mississippi (USACE) and Sustainable Operation of Inland waterways (National Science Foundation).
The Center for Risk Management of Engineering Systems develops theory, methodology and technology to assist in the management of risk for a variety of engineering systems, including water resources and technology management. His research interests include risk-based decision making, multi-objective tradeoff analysis, and hierarchical analysis of large-scale systems.
Dr. Haimes has authored more than 270 technical papers and six books. He has held several offices as president and chair of boards of directors of professional and public service organizations and is the recipient of many honors and awards. Most recently, he received the American Water Resources Association’s Icko Iben Award in 2007 for his promotion of communications among the water resources community.
