Former Spoil Islands Now Prime Habitat for Nesting Seabirds
Brown pelicans rest after foraging for food on a former Wilmington District dredged material disposal area in the Cape Fear River south of Wilmington. Managed by North Carolina Audubon and owned by the state of North Carolina, the islands haved developed into some of the last nesting areas for seabirds in southeastern North Carolina.
