ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA - February 27, 2013. The most recent quarterly Joint Headquarters Meeting of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) was held at the USGS National Center in Reston, Virginia on January 23, 2013. USACE support for Hurricane Sandy, both pre- and post-landfall, was a topic at the meeting.
Bill Werkheiser, USGS Associate Director of Water, opened the meeting with a welcome and overview. Steve Stockton, Director of Civil Works, presented the USACE overview. Chris Massey (USACE Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory) and Chris Schubert (USGS) made presentations about Hurricane Sandy efforts. There were several other joint presentations:
- Robert Mason (USGS) and Chandra Pathak (USACE) – Streamgaging Status
- Robert Mason (USGS) and Chandra Pathak (USACE) – Interagency Charters Update
- John Gray (USGS), Jenifer Bracewell (USGS), Kevin Laurent (USGS) and Deborah Cooper (USACE) – Reservoir Sedimentation (RESSED) database
- Bob Hainly (USGS) and Kevin Grode (USACE) – Agency Drought Activities
In addition, Ada Benavides, USACE Headquarters, discussed the Federal Support Toolbox and Eric Evenson presented on the USGS Water Census.
Dr. Rolf Olsen of IWR co-organized the joint meeting. He began a detail with USGS in January 2013. The detail’s goal is to improve interagency coordination on data sharing, water resources, climate change and structured decision making.
