ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA. On the fourth Thursday in April, millions of Americans participate in ‘Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work’ Day. Several children of IWR employees participated in this year’s event which marked the 25th Anniversary of this tradition. The kids had an action-packed day of learning about the USACE and the jobs their parents do.
The morning session was hosted by Humphrey’s Engineering Center and included children from all over the installation. The group of students took part in a construction activity where they built towers out of spaghetti and marshmallows. They played games and watched an educational movie about the earth. In the afternoon, the children accompanied their parents to their work areas. IWR organized activities with coloring pages about water safety, dredging, and coastal ecosystems.
The kids also participated in a scavenger hunt and had fun playing with models of barges with containers and other cargo.
“I had a great time going to work with my mom,” said Abigail Dinges (10), daughter of IWR Communications Specialist Kelly Barnes. “My favorite part was the marshmallow tower challenge and build-your-own-ice cream sundaes. It makes me proud of my mom to learn about her work.”
And the parents also thought the activities were worthwhile.
"This was Felicity's first year to attend the morning session with the other HEC children as she just turned eight. I was really pleased with the various activities the staff put together for the kids so they have a better understanding of what we do at the US Army Corps of Engineers. They were very nice and very patient with all the kids during all the activities," said IWR Civil Engineer Joy Muncy.
Thank you to all of the volunteers at IWR who made this day special for the children!
