Coastal Histories: Tales of the Coast

This section contains historical and current case studies of coastal management efforts and programs. They chronicle different coastal locations and their experiences with coastal management, as well as the evolution of the Corps' role in the coastal zone and approaches to coastal management.

Coastal residents and officials have dealt with the dynamism of the coastal zone for many years. Various engineering methods have been utilized to achieve management goals. The experiences of coastal locations can inform the practices of coastal management today.

Coastal Engineering

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has participated in coastal engineering since the early 20th century. Over time, methods for planning, designing, and implementing engineering projects along the coasts have changed as scientific and technological discoveries have informed the process of coastal management.
